Turkiye: Issued second ruling in Competition Board investigation into Google after failure to comply with imposed obligations

Description

Issued second ruling in Competition Board investigation into Google after failure to comply with imposed obligations

On 9 May 2024, the Competition Authority issued a second ruling against Google for failing to implement new designs required for "local search services" concerning hotel inquiries, as mandated in the initial ruling from 8 April 2021. The Authority fined Google 0.05% of its 2023 gross revenue for this non-compliance. The first ruling addressed Google's actions to maintain its dominant position in the general search services market, violating Article 6 of the Act on the Protection of Competition (No. 4054). This involved favouring its own local search and accommodation price comparison services, distorting competition. Consequently, Google was fined TL 296'084'899.49 and instructed to eliminate the infringement. Google proposed measures to address concerns, including redesigns for local search services, aimed at restoring effective competition.
