Description

Launch of consultative body under Fake News Eradication Task Force

On 27 September 2023, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) launched a public-private consultative body to respond to content classified as "fake news" under the Fake News Eradication Promotion Plan. The body comprises representatives of the KCC, the Korea Communications Standards Commission, and platform operators such as Naver, Kakao, Google, and Meta. The body implemented a fast-track process to review fake news by introducing a "Report Fake News'" section on the National Defense Commission's website. If a report is received, a review committee assesses the case and determines whether it should be expedited for review. If deemed necessary, the committee formally requests cooperation in self-regulation from the relevant business operator. After evaluating the content, the business operator will either label the content as "fake news currently under review by the National Security Commission" or take responsive actions such as content removal or blocking.
