On 19 April 2021, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport issued a public interest intervention notice (PIIN). The consequence of this intervention is, that now the Secretary of State will interpret the effects of the planned merger between NVIDIA and Arm Ltd. on competition, as well as on public interest. Furthermore, it will be the Secretary of State that will decide on the matter of initiating an in-depth investigation (phase 2) into the planned acquisition. Finally, the CMA opened two consultation periods as a result. One consultation will be focused on the effects of the merger on national security and will run until 14 May 2021, while the other one will run until 17 May 2021 and is centred around the effects on competition, as stated in the merger provisions of the Enterprise Act 2002.
