China: Adopted Cybersecurity Law including content moderation regulation

On 7 November 2016, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China adopted the Cybersecurity Law, which includes content moderation regulation. The law makes individuals and organisations responsible for their use of websites, prohibits the establishment of websites for illegal purposes, and requires network operators to prevent the transmission of and delete illegal content posted or shared by their users. The Cybersecurity Law will enter into effect on 1 June 2017.
