Adopted Utah Social Media Usage Amendments Bill (HB 311) including consumer protection regulations for minors

On 2 March 2023, the Social Media Usage Amendments Bill (HB 311) was adopted by Utah Senate. The Bill would prohibit social media companies from using a design or feature that may cause a minor to have an addiction to a social media platform and require the consent of a minor's parent or legal guardian for a minor to enter into a contract through an interactive computer service. The Bill would also create a right of action against social media companies for harm to minors. The obligations outlined in the Bill will come into force on 1 March 2024.
