Japan: Opened consultation on Rules for platform operators' response to illegal and harmful information

On 28 December 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications opened the consultation on the Rules for platform operators' response to illegal and harmful information such as slander, until 26 January 2023. The rules would require transparency and a proactive stance by providers. Platforms would be required to publish their content moderation policies, including measures taken and complaint handling. Proactivity would be required in preventing infringing information, especially by repeat-offender accounts, and addressing deletion requests.
