Adopted settlement in Lawsuit against Meta regarding algorithmic discrimination in housing advertising

On 21 June 2022, the lawsuit by the Department of Justice against Meta (formerly Facebook) regarding algorithmic discrimination in housing advertisement concluded with a settlement. Meta settled to change its advertising technology practices in addition to paying a fine of USD 115,054. In August 2018, the Department of Housing and Urban Development initiated a lawsuit against Meta/Facebook for algorithmic discrimination in Facebook's housing-related advertising system. The algorithm of the system discriminated against Facebook users based on their race, religion, colour, gender, marital status, disability, and national origin. The lawsuit alleged that this practice is discriminatory advertising that violates the Fair Housing Act (FHA).
