Introduced proposal for new machinery regulation introducing compliance requirements related to AI

On 21 April 2021, the European Commission submitted its proposal for a new regulation on machinery products. The proposed regulation revises the existing Machinery Directive to address safety issues posed by new technologies to machinery products. The regulation introduces new requirements for autonomous machines, human-machine collaboration, and, for the first time, artificial intelligence systems in machinery. High-risk machinery products listed in the regulation will be subject to a specific conformity assessment procedure completed by a third party. This includes software ensuring safety functions of machinery based on artificial intelligence (whether embedded or not in the machinery product).
