Launch of Indian Standard for Online Consumer Reviews

On 21 November 2022, the Department of Consumer Affairs of India' announced that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) published a Standard on Online Consumer Reviews — Principles and Requirements for their Collection, Moderation and Publication (19000:2022). The Standard aims to ensure that online reviews are genuine, authentic and trustworthy. The Standard is initially subject to a voluntary phase of compliance but will eventually be applicable to every e-commerce platform publishing consumer reviews. It contains obligations for review authors, such as providing contact information and agreeing to terms and conditions, as well as for review administrators. Once compulsory, violation of the standards constitutes an unfair trade practice or a violation of consumer rights. Likewise, consumers will be able to submit claims before the competent authorities for violation of the standards.
