Announced in-depth investigation into Viasat and Inmarsat merger

On 14 October 2022, the United Kingdom Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opened an in-depth investigation into Viasat's anticipated acquisition of Inmarsat following its preliminary finding from phase one issued on 6 October. The entities are the largest satellite communications companies that supply satellite connectivity to several industries but compete most closely in the supply of in-flight connectivity for aircraft. The CMA found that the merger could result in a substantial lessening of competition since the transaction would make it difficult for airlines to switch providers once they have installed a connectivity solution. It also found that the cost, quality and availability of services could be affected. The CMA during its investigation will determine if it will approve the proposed acquisition.
