Issued Directive on Huawei exclusion from 5G networks in UK

On 13 October 2022, the UK government issued a designation notice to Huawei and a “Designated Vendor Direction under section 105Z1 of the Communications Act 2003” to 35 broadband and mobile operators ordering the removal of Huawei technology from the UK’s 5G public networks by the end of 2027. Among other points, the government ordered: an immediate ban on the installation of new Huawei equipment in 5G networks; the removal of Huawei equipment from sites significant to national security by 28 January 2023; the removal of Huawei equipment from the network core by 31 December 2023; a limitation of Huawei equipment to 35% of the full fibre access network by 31 October 2023; and a ban over installing Huawei equipment that has been affected by US sanctions in full fibre networks. The Direction will be implemented on 14 October 2022.
