On 21 March 2022, the UK government closed a consultation on new legislative instruments that would require Huawei equipment to be removed from 5G networks by the end of 2027. Proposed procedures for full fiber broadband operators to stop deploying Huawei equipment that is subject to US sanctions are included in the consultation. This consultation takes place in accordance with the Telecommunications (Security) Act 2021, which modified the Communications Act 2003 and provides the Secretary of State with new powers to designate particular suppliers and issue directives to public communications providers in the interests of national security. Providers' usage of products, services, and facilities supplied by a specified vendor may be restricted by the directives.
