Issued Artificial Intelligence and Public Action Study proposing new powers for CNIL

On 30 August 2022, the Council of State of France published its study titled "Engaging with artificial intelligence for a better public service", outlining proposals for giving the National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (CNIL) additional powers for regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. The Council of State particularly emphasised the potential of artificial intelligence for public service and the close link between the regulation of AI systems and the data protection framework. Accordingly, the study finds that CNIL's powers should be expanded in order for the agency to become the national supervisory authority responsible for regulating AI systems and enforcing the upcoming EU AI Act.
