On 3 August 2022, the Indian Government withdrew the Personal Data Protection Bill (2019) which had been pending in the House (Lok Sabha). It included a comprehensive data protection regime and measures with regard to content moderation. In particular, the Bill envisioned that social media platforms could, under certain circumstances, be treated as publishers and therefore be held accountable for the content they hosted. Furthermore, it would have required platforms to open an office in India.
