Adopted Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) regulating personal information protection in electronic commerce

On 13 April 2000, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) received Royal Assent, and was formally enacted. The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act applies to private-sector organisations across Canada that collect, use or disclose personal information in the course of their commercial operations and aims to protect internet users’ privacy rights. In addition, PIPEDA establishes requirements for a legal framework that provides for the protection of users' personal information [CPTPP provision 14.8.2].
