The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) was fully implemented on 1 January 2004. Some of PIPEDA's provisions became effective earlier on 1 January 2001. The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act applies to private-sector organisations across Canada that collect, use or disclose personal information in the course of their commercial operations and aims to protect internet users’ privacy rights. the law also establishes requirements for a legal framework that provides for the protection of users' personal information [CPTPP provision 14.8.2].
