Indonesia: Implemented Government Regulation 71/2019 regulating data localisation

On 4 October 2019, the Government of Indonesia issues and implements Government Regulation 71 (GR 71/2019). The Regulation revokes GR 82/2012 and introduces a classification of Electronic System Providers (ESP) in Public and Private. Public ESPs are required to be located in Indonesia. Private ESPs can be placed outside Indonesia but they should allow supervision by the Indonesian authorities, for which data access must be granted. The new requirements for Public ESPs will be implemented on 4 October 2021.
