On 2 August 2022, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) closed its consultation on the possible revision of the Dot Com Disclosure Guidelines on online advertising practices. The main concern of the FTC was that the existing guidelines, issued in March 2013, are abused by companies to justify deceptive practices and avoid liability under the FTC Act. Therefore, the FTC sought comments on the potential revision of the guidelines specifically concerning the issues of social media advertising, embedded game advertisements, and "dark patterns" (deceptive user interfaces).
