Roskomnadzor announces blocking of access to Instagram due to alleged calls for “violence against Russians”

On 11 March 2022, the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) announced that it will restrict access to Instagram, following a request received on the same day from the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation. Roskomnadzor noted that the decision to block access to the platform is due to the distribution of materials on Instagram containing “calls to commit violent acts against citizens of the Russian Federation”. In addition, Roskomnadzor stated that it will impose the restrictions on 14 March 2022 to allow Russian users to transfer their photo and video material and notify their subscribers.
