Description

Competition Authority launched inquiry into quantum computing sector

On 10 March 2026, the Competition Authority (AGCM) opened an inquiry into the quantum computing sector. The AGCM will examine barriers to entry and lock-in risks linked to proprietary standards, as well as the potential for technological pre-emption, particularly in light of the rapid growth in patent filings. It also highlights the risk that quantum computing could be absorbed as a complementary module within already dominant cloud ecosystems. Potential applications across cybersecurity, biotechnology, materials design, process optimisation, and fintech are noted.
