On 29 January 2026, the National Assembly of South Korea adopted the Partial Amendment to the Act on the Establishment and Operation of the Broadcasting and Media Communications Commission (Bill No. 2214862), a committee alternative consolidating five earlier amendment bills proposed by the Chair of the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee. The Law applies to online platform services, streaming services, messaging services, and search services providing content to domestic users in South Korea and subject to oversight by the Broadcasting and Media Communications Review Committee. Under the existing Act, the Review Committee may use written resolutions for urgent blocking decisions concerning non-consensual intimate imagery. The Law expanded this written resolution procedure to cover eight additional categories of content, namely content relating to prohibited narcotics use and trade, prohibited gambling, overseas copyright infringement targeting domestic users, telecommunications financial fraud, suicide-inducing information, organ trade, personal data trade, and firearms or explosives manufacturing methods or designs. The Law will enter into force on 19 February 2026 upon promulgation as Law No. 21379.
