Description

Office of Communication opened consultation on inquiry into impact of artificial intelligence in telecommunications sector

On 27 January 2026, the Office of Communications (Ofcom) opened a consultation on the inquiry into the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the telecommunications sector, with submissions due by 10 March 2026. The Office of Communications is inviting input from telecoms providers, technology developers, consumer organisations, and other stakeholders to understand current and emerging AI use cases across the telecoms value chain and the customer journey. The work is structured around 3 questions on how AI tools are being deployed, the risks and opportunities for residential and business customers, and whether changes to the Office of Communications’ rules may be needed to support responsible innovation and protect customers. The Office of Communications plans to publish its findings in the second half of 2026 and to indicate any next steps at that stage.
