Description

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission opened an investigation into X over alleged misuse of artificial intelligence to generate harmful content

On 3 January 2026, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) opened an investigation into online harms on the social media platform X through the alleged misuse of artificial intelligence tools. The investigation concerns the digital manipulation of images of women and minors to produce indecent, grossly offensive, or otherwise harmful content. Following the enforcement of the Online Safety Act 2025, licensed online platforms and service providers are required to take measures to prevent the dissemination of harmful content, including obscene and indecent content and child sexual abuse materials. MCMC stated that, while X is not a licensed service provider, it has a duty to prevent the dissemination of harmful content on its platform. As part of its investigation, MCMC stated that it would call in X's representatives. Further, MCMC also announced that it was investigating X users alleged to have violated the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998's prohibition of the misuse of network or application services to transmit grossly offensive, obscene, or indecent content.
