On 3 October 2025, the California Cybersecurity Integration Center: Artificial Intelligence (AB 979) enters into force in accordance with the standard California legislative calendar for non-urgency statutes as Chapter 285 of the Statutes of 2025. The Act amends Section 8586.5 of the Government Code to require the California Cybersecurity Integration Center, under the Office of Emergency Services, to develop, by 1 January 2027, the California Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cybersecurity Collaboration Playbook in consultation with the Office of Information Security and the Government Operations Agency. The playbook is intended to facilitate information sharing across the cyber and AI communities and strengthen collective cyber defences against emerging threats. It requires alignment with federal requirements, standards, and industry best practices, including the Joint Cyber Defence Collaborative AI Cybersecurity Collaboration Playbook, and includes confidentiality provisions for cyber threat indicators and defensive measures shared under the California Public Records Act, providing a grace period until 1 January 2027 for full implementation.
