On 1 April 2025, national market surveillance authorities of the Consumer Safety Network (CSN), coordinated by the European Commission, launched the first coordinated product safety sweep under the General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 (GPSR), targeting online listings of childcare articles offered across 47 providers of online marketplaces, including both EU-based and third-country platforms. This enforcement action, coordinated by the European Commission, aims to assess compliance with key GPSR obligations, including the display of minimum product safety and traceability information, registration with the EU Safety Gate Portal, and the designation of single points of contact for consumers and authorities. The sweep will cover a representative sample of platforms, including five designated Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) under the Digital Services Act (EU) 2022/2065—Aliexpress, Amazon, Shein, Temu, and Zalando—as well as smaller but significant platforms in national markets. Authorities will verify whether product listings provide required details on the manufacturer and EU responsible person, enable product identification, and whether providers of online marketplaces respond appropriately to orders related to dangerous or non-compliant products. The findings of the sweep will inform future enforcement efforts, support regulatory dialogue with signatories of the Product Safety Pledge+, and contribute to the implementation of the Commission’s broader strategy set out in the e-commerce Communication, “A comprehensive EU toolbox for safe and sustainable e-commerce.”
