On 25 February 2025, the Minister for Communications announced the Online Safety (Age-Restricted Social Media Platforms) Rules, 2025 under the Online Safety Act to regulate age-restricted social media services. The rules apply to providers of social media platforms but exclude services primarily focused on messaging, online gaming, education, health support, or communication between educational or health institutions and their users, with advertising purposes disregarded in this classification.
