Brazil: Bill amending Law No. 13.756/2018 on fixed-odds betting communication ban (Bill No. 2985) was introduced to Federal Senate

Description

Bill amending Law No. 13.756/2018 on fixed-odds betting communication ban (Bill No. 2985) was introduced to Federal Senate

On 12 June 2023, a Bill to amend Law No. 13.756 of 12 December 2018, which regulates fixed-odds betting lotteries (also referred to as “bets”), was introduced to the Senate. The Bill would prohibit all forms of communication, advertising, and marketing promoting such betting activities across any media platforms. The proposal follows the absence of implementing regulation by the Executive within the timeframe established by Law No. 13,756 , during which advertising of betting services expanded across various media channels, including sponsorships and social media. Although the Law requires communication and marketing to follow principles of corporate social responsibility, the amendment states that these provisions have not been consistently observed. The Bill cites the prevalence of personalised and continuous advertising and notes concerns about its accessibility to younger audiences.
