United States of America: Federal Communications Commission opened consultation on inquiry into complementary PNT technologies

On 27 March 2025, the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) initiated a consultation as part of its Inquiry into potential actions to support the development of technologies that complement the Global Positioning System (GPS). The inquiry aims to gather input on how to strengthen America's positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) systems by incentivising the deployment of alternative and complementary technologies. The FCC invited comments on how such systems could operate alongside GPS to form a diversified “system of systems,” covering technical, regulatory, economic, and international considerations. The initial comments are to be submitted by 28 April 2025, with reply comments due by 13 May 2025.
