European Commission adopts binding interoperability measures for Apple’s iPadOS under Digital Markets Act

On 19 March 2025, the European Commission adopted legally binding decisions under the Digital Markets Act, detailing the steps Apple must take to comply with its interoperability obligations concerning iPadOS. These measures aim to facilitate the seamless integration of third-party products and services with iPads, offering European consumers a wider choice of compatible devices and applications. The Commission's decisions cover two areas. First, they require Apple to enable third-party access to iPadOS connectivity features, such as device pairing, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, and notification display, while maintaining privacy and security protections. Second, they streamline Apple’s process for handling interoperability requests, ensuring developers benefit from clearer technical documentation, timely communication, and predictable review timelines.
