European Union: Announced European Commission investigation into Apple's operating system iPadOS compliance with Digital Markets Act

Description

Announced European Commission investigation into Apple's operating system iPadOS compliance with Digital Markets Act

On 4 November 2024, the European Commission (EC) opened an investigation to assess whether Apple's iPadOS operating system complies with relevant obligations under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This followed the addition of the iPadOS to a list of core platform services for which Apple is designated as gatekeeper to ensure compliance with these obligations in April 2024. These obligations include allowing users to set a default web browser of their choice on the iPadOS, alternative app stores on the iPadOS, and accessory devices, including headphones and smart pens, to access iPadOS features effectively. In response to this designation, Apple published a compliance report detailing measures taken for the iPadOS to comply with the DMA. Based on this report and the input of interested stakeholders, the EC will assess the iPadOS's compliance.
