On 4 January 2022, the Bundeskartellamt's determination of Google as a company of paramount significance across markets has become final after Google declined to appeal the decision. The determination will remain valid for five years, until 4 January 2027. Under section 19a of the German Competition Act (GWB), the Bundeskartellamt can open investigations against companies "of paramount significance for competition across markets" more quickly and restrain companies from implementing anti-competitive behaviour through a two-step procedure. In its decision, the Bundeskartellamt noted that Google holds a position of power across different markets and provides many highly sought-after services, thereby justifying its classification as a company of paramount significance. This determination may affect further Bundeskartellamt investigations into Google, including two ongoing investigations into its data processing terms and the Google News Showcase service.
