European Union: European Commission adopted preliminary report in investigation into Alphabet's self preferencing on Google Search under Digital Markets Act

Description

European Commission adopted preliminary report in investigation into Alphabet's self preferencing on Google Search under Digital Markets Act

On 19 March 2025, the European Commission adopted a preliminary report with findings on Alphabet's self-preferencing on Google Search. The report stated that Google Search does not comply with the requirement for fair and non-discriminatory ranking. The report found that Alphabet gives its own services, including shopping, hotel booking, and transport, more prominent placement in Google Search results compared to third-party services. It was highlighted that the services appear at the top of search results or in dedicated spaces with enhanced visual formats, leading the Commission to conclude that Alphabet engages in self-preferencing. Alphabet has the opportunity to respond before the Commission issues a final decision on non-compliance.
