On 13 March 2025, the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea passed an amendment to the Personal Information Protection Act, following its approval by the Political Affairs Committee on 24 February 2025. The amendment would require overseas businesses with a local subsidiary to designate that subsidiary as their domestic representative. Furthermore, the amendment would introduce new sanctions for non-compliance. The amendment is intended to modify the domestic agent system and adjust personal data protection requirements. The Personal Information Protection Commission will be responsible for revising the enforcement ordinances and conducting inspections related to the implementation of the amended provisions. The Bill is currently awaiting presidential approval and subsequent publication in the Official Gazette before it can take legal effect.
