Data Protection Act establishing Office of the Data Protection Commissioner entered into force

On 25 November 2019, Data Protection Act, 2019 entered into force. The Act establishes the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), an independent body responsible for overseeing the implementation and enforcement of data protection laws. The ODPC has powers to investigate complaints, conduct audits, and issue enforcement notices. The ODPC is also tasked with promoting awareness and understanding of data protection principles among the public and data handlers.
