On 8 November 2019, the President endorsed the text for the Data Protection Act, 2019. The Act establishes the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), an independent body responsible for overseeing the implementation and enforcement of data protection laws. The ODPC has powers to investigate complaints, conduct audits, and issue enforcement notices. The ODPC is also tasked with promoting awareness and understanding of data protection principles among the public and data handlers.
