On 4 December 2021, the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) published an interim report on the Market Study into Apple's and Google's mobile ecosystems "effective duopoly". The report contains the CMA's initial findings and asks for comments by 7 February 2022. The report particularly tackles the topic of competition regarding the supply of mobile devices and operating systems, the distribution of mobile apps, the supply of mobile browsers and engines. Furthermore, it focuses on the role of Apple and Google regarding the competition between app developers. According to the first findings, the CMA assesses that both Apple and Google would meet the conditions to have a "Strategic Market Status" (SMS) that requires compliance with a specific code of conduct. Finally, the CMA decides to not make a market investigation reference because, in this case, it considers the Digital Market Unit (DMU) better equipped to adopt solutions to competition distortions.
