On 1 September 2024, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC) regulatory policy on local content requirements for e-commerce platforms and streaming service providers entered into force. The regulatory policy forms part of the CRTC's mandate to ensure that all sectors contributing to the Canadian broadcasting system, including new digital entrants, provide support for Canadian and Indigenous content. The regulatory policy requires these services to contribute a minimum of 5% of their Canadian revenues to the Canadian broadcasting system. The requirement applies to online streaming services with annual revenue exceeding CAD 25 million.
