On 1 February 2025, the Thailand Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) closes its consultation on expanding the list of authorised cryptocurrencies for digital payment providers. The proposal aims to allow digital token issuers, initial coin offering (ICO) portals, and exchanges to accept USD Coin (USDC) and Tether (USDT). The five categories of cryptocurrencies currently approved by the SEC are Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Stellar, and programmable payment tokens. The consultation sought feedback on whether stakeholders agree with the principles of the amendments, the addition of USDC, and USDT with an emphasis on ongoing regulatory supervision and international impacts.
