China: Announced CAC special action of clear and bright governance of typical algorithm issues on online platforms

On 24 November 2024, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) announced the special action "Clear and Bright: Typical Problems Governance of Internet Platform Algorithms," aimed at improving algorithm transparency and fairness across internet platforms. The special action will run until 14 February 2025. It focuses on addressing algorithmic manipulation of ranking lists, infringements on the rights of workers in new employment forms, and discriminatory pricing practices based on user characteristics. The special action also aims to enhance algorithm services for vulnerable groups, including minors and the elderly, while strengthening security measures to ensure data integrity and ethical algorithm usage. It targets platforms employing recommendation algorithms, live-streaming services, and social media, with the goal of fostering a fair and secure digital ecosystem.
