Announced commencement of accession process of Peru to Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA)

On 15 November 2024, the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA) Joint Committee announced the establishment of an Accession Working Group (AWG) to commence the accession process for Peru to the DEPA. The AWG, chaired by the Republic of Korea, will include government representatives from each DEPA party and will assess Peru's ability to meet DEPA standards and commitments. The accession aims to strengthen the economic partnership between Peru and DEPA members, building on existing collaborations such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. The AWG will submit a report on the proposed terms and conditions of Peru’s accession to the Joint Committee. The DEPA establishes common norms for cooperation and harmonisation regarding digital trade, as well as digital content and services. Furthermore, the DEPA creates a common framework for data protection, establishes common rules on digital trade and removes digital barriers to data transfers.
