Description

Published draft General-Purpose AI Code of Practice

On 14 September 2024, the European AI Office published the first draft of the General-Purpose Artificial Intelligence (AI) Code of Practice. The drawing up of such a Code of Practice is envisioned by Article 56 of the European Union AI Act. The Code guides providers of general-purpose AI models in meeting compliance obligations, with procedures for demonstrating compliance and enabling AI Office oversight. It promotes understanding across the AI value chain to support integration and fulfilment of obligations under the AI Act and related laws, including copyright compliance. It also requires providers to assess and mitigate systemic risks associated with high-risk AI models in the EU. The Code of Practice will be discussed in a Plenary where nearly 1,000 stakeholders, including EU Member State representatives and international observers, will review the draft. In parallel, participants have two weeks to submit written feedback, which the Chairs may use to adjust measures, prioritising risk proportionality, flexibility, and SME-friendly compliance.
