On 16 April 2024, an Act to implement the 2024 Federal budget for Canada (Bill C-69), including plans to create an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safety Institute, was introduced to the House of Commons. Approval of this budget will secure CAD 50 million to be spent over five years from 2024-25 onwards to create the AI Safety Institute with the mission of promoting the safe development and deployment of AI. The Institute's scope includes better understanding and protection against the risks of advanced and generative AI systems, as well as engaging with stakeholders and international partners with competitive AI policies to inform the final design and stand-up of the institute.
