Announced Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute establishment as part of Budget Bill 2024

On 16 April 2024, the Canadian government announced plans to create an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safety Institute as part of the 2024 budget. The budget proposed that CAD 50 million would be spent over five years from 2024-25 onwards to create the AI Safety Institute with the mission of promoting the safe development and deployment of AI. The Institute's scope includes better understanding and protection against the risks of advanced and generative AI systems, as well as engaging with stakeholders and international partners with competitive AI policies to inform the final design and stand-up of the institute.
