United Kingdom: Issued ruling in case appealing ICO's decision against DSG Retail Ltd. concerning alleged data protection violations

Description

Issued ruling in case appealing ICO's decision against DSG Retail Ltd. concerning alleged data protection violations

On 6 July 2022, the First-tier Tribunal (Information Rights) (FTT) issued a ruling concerning DSG Retail Limited’s (DSG) appeal against the ruling by the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) from January 2020. The ICO had issued a fine of GBP 500’000 (approx. USD 640’000) to DSG for inadequate security measures and the company’s failure to protect personal data. The FTT reduced the fine to GBP 250’000 (approx. USD 320’000). The FTT reasoned that the fine by the ICO was too high for the damage done in comparison to previous rulings.
