Description

Adopted National Artificial Intelligence Policy Framework

On 15 April 2023, the central government of South Africa adopted a National Artificial Intelligence Policy Framework. The overall goal of the Framework is to support a robust AI ecosystem that is able to drive digital transformation and inclusion in South Africa. The Framework underscored the importance of ethical AI development, transparency, data protection and human-centred approaches to AI. The Framework constitutes the first step in developing a national AI policy and will serve as the basis for creating AI regulations and a potential AI Act. Moreover, the Policy Framework stipulates pillars for AI policy, including talent development, digital infrastructure, research and development, public sector implementation, ethical AI guidelines, and privacy and data protection.
