On 13 August 2024, the Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the completion of its principal set of encryption algorithms designed to secure electronic information against potential quantum computer cyberattacks. The NIST issued three standards that are ready for immediate implementation across various economic activities. These standards aim to protect the security and privacy of digital information in the face of advancing quantum computing technology. The finalised standards, including Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 203, 204, and 205, offer encryption methods and digital signature protection, with the aim of ensuring the United States remains at the forefront of technological security and economic competitiveness.
