Indonesia: Issued KPPU interim findings in assessment of Starlink's impact on internet service provider industry

On 7 August 2024, the Indonesian Competition Authority (KPPU) announced that it had convened a focused group discussion to review the impact of Starlink's entry into the Indonesian internet service market. The meeting involved KPPU members, government officials, industry leaders, and consumer advocates. The concerns addressed include Starlink's compliance with local regulations, particularly regarding domestic content and human resource involvement, as well as potential issues with predatory pricing. The KPPU determined that while Starlink meets many regulatory requirements, there are calls for greater scrutiny of its impact on local manufacturing and consumer protection, especially given its current limited service centre network. The KPPU noted that it will continue to assess these aspects to ensure fair competition and consumer welfare in the industry.
