Description

Opened KPPU investigation into PT Starlink Services Indonesia over alleged unfair competition (42/KPPU-PR/V/2024)

On 30 May 2024, the Indonesian Competition Authority (KPPU) announced the commencement of an investigation into PT Starlink Services Indonesia (Starlink) over alleged unfair competition. The investigation follows public and regulatory concerns that have been raised over alleged unfair competition after the entry of the internet service provider Starlink into Indonesia's retail internet service. The KPPU held a focused group discussion to address these issues, attended by KPPU members, industry representatives, and academics. In particular, concerns include Starlink's compliance with local regulations, potential predatory pricing, and its impact on small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Associations highlighted regulatory gaps and questioned whether Starlink adheres to the same standards as local providers. The KPPU will continue to investigate the claims. However, regarding the low prices offered by Starlink, the KPPU noted that they cannot be considered "predatory pricing".
