On 17 July 2024, the European Union (EU) and the Republic of Korea announced four jointly funded semiconductor/chips projects under their Digital Partnership, with a total investment of EUR 12 million, equally shared. In particular, these projects aim to advance heterogeneous integration technologies and neuromorphic computing, combining multiple components on one chip and mimicking human brain functions. The selected projects, ENERGIZE, NEHIL, HAETAE, and ViTFOX, focus on developing energy-efficient Artificial Intelligence (AI) circuits, laser-based radar systems, light-based AI chips, and improved visual data processing. These three-year projects are co-funded by Horizon Europe’s Chips Joint Undertaking and Korea’s National Research Foundation (NRF). The new semiconductor projects, monitored by the NRF and the Chips Joint Undertaking, will begin by year-end. Both parties will continue to explore further collaboration opportunities, leveraging their cooperative history and strengths in innovation.
