Adopted Bill to partially amend the Consumer Product Safety Act including local operation requirement

On 19 June 2024, the House of Councillors of Japan adopted the Bill to partially amend the Consumer Product Safety Act. The Bill includes local operation requirements for foreign businesses selling products to domestic consumers through online platforms. The foreign businesses will be subject to notification under the Consumer Affairs Act and will be required to appoint a responsible person in Japan. Further, the Bill also includes measures requiring online platform providers to remove products that pose a risk to domestic consumers. The Bill will come into effect on a date specified by the Cabinet Order.
